Kroger is by far the largest supermarket chain in the entire country, and millions of Americans rely on its stores for groceries and other necessities on a daily basis. The company operates over 2,800 locations across 35 states, including some brand names like Ralphs, King Supers, and Dillons. But in recent weeks, Kroger Shoppers have been complaining about mass shortages in its stores and unprecedented price hikes hitting a series of essential products. That’s why today we’ve decided to investigate which items are missing from the grocery store shelves and how much the chain is raising prices in 2023. Supply chain problems are still wreaking havoc in many industries even after almost three years after the pandemic and the disruptions caused by it. The food industry in particular has dealt with several problems in 2022, which has impacted production, transportation, and companies’ profit margins. Now we’re starting to see the consequences of lower supplies entering the system and higher operational costs for businesses in a market where inflation has already pushed overall prices up by more than 11% in the past 12 months. Industry executives say that U.S. consumers are going to struggle with out-of-stock products and rampant grocery bills for yet another year. Many headlines are detailing that’s already happening in many stores all over the nation. Last week, thousands of shoppers took to social media to report missing food items at dozens of Kroger supermarket locations across the country. Yahoo reports that the shortages are looking a lot like a repeat of early 2020 when many staples sold out. The start of 2023 is seeing a lot of empty shelves at Kroger, according to numerous sources, some providing video evidence of the worsening supply chain issues. On top of that, not only is the grocery facing multiple shortages, but prices for the items that are still available are reaching eye-popping levels. In one of the videos posted on social media, one grocery shop had documented staggering changes in inventory and pricing at the supermarket chain. Many bare shelves can be seen, while in several aisles, shelves were only stocked with ultra-high priced items, with cheaper alternatives nowhere to be found. We are at Kroger and are noticing pricing creases on groceries and a lot of empty shelves, one vlogger said during its latest visit to the supermarket. We are here to check out skyrocketing prices and the empty shelves situation. It’s getting rough out here, stores seem to be struggling with getting products, he added. In the video, several areas of the store were alarmingly understocked, such as the meat produce and pet product aisles. If you find pet food, don’t worry about the price, just get some, the shopper named Dan said. We’re seeing inconvenient stickers everywhere and these are fresh. This must be becoming an issue again. Another worrying discovery the vlogger made was that most of the store brand items were missing, the only things left at the store were overpriced products of lesser sold out brands. Moreover, Kroger’s dairy items were also short in supply, with most products, particularly eggs, facing shortages. People are starting to buy other eggs because the store brands, the cheapest ones you can get, are getting really expensive, Dan noted. On Reddit, one user posted a photo showing Kroger’s large-grade AA eggs for almost $27. Shoppers also revealed the company is seemingly raising original prices on a number of essentials just to mark them down and pretend they’re actually on sale. However, the sale price is still higher than the original. For instance, a 5-pound bag of mandarin oranges was on sale for $6.49 at Kroger, the same price it had in December.
