Detroit was once the crown jewel of American industry—the birthplace of Fordism and mass credit, a city built on reinforced concrete and fair wages. It was a symbol of progress and prosperity, home to nearly two million people at its peak. But racial unrest, the collapse of the automobile industry, and economic crises drained the city, leaving it a shadow of its former self. Today, only 700,000 residents remain, trapped in a waking nightmare of poverty, crime, and neglect. Among them are the most vulnerable—predominantly low-income African Americans—left to navigate a city that has seemingly abandoned them. We meet those who remain, resilient amid the ruins.
