Perfection is often sought for, but is equally as often not achieved. Perfection is a state not achieved by many. So it’s no wonder that when a perfectly straight line perfectly cuts through a six meter high, six meter wide rock, it makes you wonder how the impossible became possible. Is this an impeccable work of nature? Could ancient people have done this? Did the extraterrestrial take part in any of it? The Al-Nasla Rock is a 4,000 year old rock formation found in Saudi Arabia’s Taima Oasis. This oasis is located in the northwestern region of the country and is considered to be one of the oldest settlements in Saudi Arabia. The Al-Nasla Rock formation is composed of twin sandstone rocks balanced on a naturally formed pedestal. As mentioned, the rocks are measured with a height of six meters and a width of nine meters.
The southeast face of the rocks is carved with petroglyphs, which are carvings of humans, ibexes, and Arabian horses found sporadically placed. However, what makes this rock formation known all over is its perfectly straight line that splits the rock into two. The line that segments the two is perfectly straight. Almost too perfectly straight that no definitive reason can be deduced by scientists. Realists believe that the perfect split is caused by nature, the imaginative turn to ancient civilizations and their tools, while believers turn to the extraterrestrial and their alien technology. Let’s break down each theory individually. The first theory is that the Al-Nasla Rock split is caused purely by natural causes. However, just saying natural causes isn’t enough since there’s sub-theories to this.
One theory points out that the rocks may have split into two due to tectonic plate shifting, however this is completely debunked as the African Arabian tectonic plate, the nearest tectonic plate present in the region, does not share its borders to where the Al-Nasla Rock stands. Even if the Al-Nasla Rock did stand at the tectonic plate border and split in two, this does not explain the perfectly straight line that splits the two rocks. Another theory claims that the rocks may have split into two when a joint part of the rock naturally eroded and withered away. Sandstone in particular is very susceptible to joint damages, especially vertical separations like the one exhibited by the Al-Nasla Rock. Geologist and geophysicist Professor Tim Reston of the University of Birmingham shared his thoughts on the strange formation, saying the split is probably a joint which has a natural fracture in the rock typically caused by pressure release and expansion.
This formed when the rock layer was more continuous and now left exposed by erosion of the surroundings. If it is a joint, it might have beautiful plumose structures on both sides of the crack which look like feathers, unless these have been widened by wind erosion. However, most joints show striations of the separation and a perfectly clean slice is unheard of. It would take millions of years for mere sand alone to erode a solid, ginormous rock enough to cut it into two separate parts. Interestingly, geologists agree that the Al-Nasla Rock is only around 4,000 years old. Another natural cause that can be used to explain the Al-Nasla’s perfect split is the freeze-thaw weather cycle. According to this theory, if water seeped into the boulder, the water could freeze while inside the rock, and once it thaws out, a permanent crack would exist within the boulder that, if supported by many more freeze-thawed spots, could cause the rock to split.
Extraterrestrial life is hypothetical life that may occur outside Earth and which did not originate on Earth. Such life might range from simple prokaryotes (or comparable life forms) to intelligent beings and even sapient beings, possibly bringing forth civilizations that might be far more advanced than humanity.
