"the U.S. is preparing for what comes next…" with Neil Degrasse Tyson
Neil Degrasse Tyson, The U.S. is preparing for war. With new missiles, jets, warships and now lasers, the U.S. Navy is preparing itself for any incoming threat from Russia. And now that the world’s largest and most expensive ship, the USS Gerald R. Ford, has joined the fleet, Russia may be in for quite a surprise. Join us as we learn about the newest U.S. Navy weapons that can cause some devastating damage. The USS Gerald R. Ford It’s no secret that the U.S. just loves new toys. And when we say toys, what we really mean is billion-dollar weapons with powers of mass destruction. And the newest item to join their already impressive list of weapons is the USS Gerald R. Ford. This isn’t a weapon per se, but a massive ship that will carry all the unimaginably powerful weaponry that it can carry. The newest aircraft carrier was a jaw-dropping sight the first time it set sail. And the public finally got a look at the scale of the newest aircraft carrier. You see, at this point, it is not only the world’s largest warship ever built, but also the most expensive one ever. It cost the United States $13.3 billion to bring this behemoth to life. And we’re not using that word lightly. The ship is nine stories tall over sea level and weighs 97,000 tons. Just looking at this aircraft is bound to strike fear into an enemy’s heart. But there’s even more good news. You see, the U.S. Navy’s newest aircraft carrier is actually ready to be deployed. And this is major news because the USS Gerald R. Ford has been a dream for the past 21 years. What started with a simple concept almost two decades ago is finally a reality, and it will officially become a part of the U.S. fleet in May 2023. Everyone’s been busy ensuring that this ship is actually seaworthy. Sure, it may look like it is, but that doesn’t mean anything. Thankfully, successful training with various aircraft and other carriers has been conducted over the last few months, and what do you know, nothing but good news for the USA. So it was finally ready for the final exercise, the one to test how it would deploy. This exercise is known as Comp 2X. During this exercise, the ship works together with all other members in the fleet to see if it performs as expected. The USS Gerald passed with flying colors and got all its certifications, and in a few weeks, she’ll be setting sail for six months for its first mission. But the road to this day wasn’t easy. That may not sound too surprising, but the size of the warship really exaggerated the problems. In fact, the past decade has been marred with problem after problem that delayed the ship’s deployment by years. And it also raised the costs by a couple of billion dollars when compared to the Navy’s original estimates. Yes, budget issues are normal, but not by billions of dollars, surely. The cause of all these issues wasn’t necessarily the ship itself, but all the equipment that it was to be jam-packed with. One of the most troublesome pieces of technology were the electromagnetic aircraft launch system, advanced weapons elevators, and advanced arresting gear. These are just upgraded versions of their original equipment and are meant to do the job more efficiently. Instead, these components and many more turned out to become a huge point of discord that the Navy, lawmakers, and even President Donald Trump couldn’t seem to stop arguing about. And if that wasn’t enough, the ship was still incomplete as recently as March. The construction of the ship was also ongoing up until a couple of months ago, but no longer. This is the last time that a ship will take six years to deploy after it’s delivered. Yes, it took six years for them to get the ship seaworthy. We told you it wasn’t easy. Thankfully, not only will these troubles not bother them again, they’re a thing of the past.
