PRESIDENT ISAAC HERZOG: How dangerous is it to be a Jew right now? | WELT Exclusive Interview

Israel’s President Isaac Herzog, in an interview with Paul Ronzheimer, expressed grave concern over the disturbing rise of anti-Semitic incidents worldwide. The interview began with a distressing incident in Dagestan where individuals seemed to target Jews on a plane, leading President Herzog to condemn the act as anti-Semitic and call for global vigilance against such hate-driven phenomena.

Herzog commended the prompt intervention of Russian authorities in protecting innocent civilians, emphasizing the importance of maintaining ongoing relations with Russia and continuing flights, particularly to Dagestan, with an urgent call for the Russian government to prioritize safety.

Regarding the safety of Jewish communities, President Herzog noted the historical pattern where anti-Semitism tends to escalate, emphasizing the clash of values between those advocating hate and violence versus democracy, freedom, and peace. He urged governments and civil societies to stand resolute against this growing anti-Semitic trend.

The interview also touched on anti-Semitic protests in Germany, where Herzog highlighted that many of these events are instigated and funded by Iran, pushing anti-Jewish rhetoric to divide Western societies and revive old prejudices. He commended the German government for its support and moral clarity in addressing the issue.

When asked if the current situation reminds him of the Holocaust, President Herzog acknowledged that while the Holocaust is incomparable in scale, certain recent stories and tragedies do bear resemblance, citing instances of Jews being targeted and discriminated against.

The interview concluded with a grim portrayal of violence in the Gaza border region, which Herzog described as a slaughterhouse, particularly a tragic incident involving Shani Nicole, a young woman who met a gruesome fate. President Herzog extended condolences to her bereaved family and emphasized the urgent need to address the escalating violence and hatred.
