REPORTS OF RESISTANCE: Journalism in Somalia – Fighting Terror and Corruption
Anyone who does not report in line with the government in Somalia is working in mortal danger – including Abdalle Ahmed Mumin and Awil Mohamud Abdi. The Somali government and the Islamist terrorist militia Al-Shabaab use tactics that violate human rights to influence independent reporting. But Mumin and Abdi carried on. Abdi survived two attacks – on the radio station Radio Gaalkacyo and on his private home. The community radio station reports on progressive topics such as women’s rights and popular music – much to the displeasure of the terrorist militia. Mumin was detained for 33 days for his reporting. Both lost family members, friends or colleagues in the attacks. Watch their entire story now!
