REPORTS OF RESISTANCE: Iran - Exploited for Hostage Diplomacy | WELT Documentary

Nahid Taghavi has lived in Cologne since 1983, commuting back and forth between Germany and Iran, her two places of residence, for many years. The 69-year-old has been campaigning for human rights and especially women’s rights and freedom of expression in Iran. This was a thorn in the side of the Iranian authorities, who arrested Taghavi in October 2020. An Iranian court sentenced her to ten years and eight months in prison for membership of an illegal group and propaganda against the state.

Politically motivated imprisonment is part of the repressive apparatus of Iran’s theocratic rulers. Since the outbreak of the revolutionary movement in September 2022 alone, after the death of Jina Mahsa Amini in police custody, there have been more than 20,000 new arrests. What distinguishes the case of Mariam Claren’s mother: her German citizenship. So called hostage diplomacy has a system in Iran. The autocratic country has been arbitrarily imprisoning and sentencing foreign and dual nationals on false charges for years to exert diplomatic pressure. Watch Nahid Taghavi’s story now!
